The Amish life fascinates me, and I've thoroughly enjoyed many of the Amish-themed books I've read. I've never read Wanda Brunstetter before, but she came highly rated and this one looked interesting.
The story centers around Will Henderson, an English boy who, at the age of 6, is left with an Amish couple. His father ostensibly plans to return for him but, through lost messages and miscommunications, never does. Will grows up believing that his father abandoned him. Predictably, as his impending wedding to Karen nears, Will finds that he harbors many doubts about his father and an unforgiving heart. Conveniently, at Thanksgiving, his father suddenly reappears in Will's life.
I'd call this Amish-light. It's a sweet novel with a great deal of unrealized potential. The characters are one-dimensional and the misunderstandings and lack of communication are far-fetched and unrealistic. The ending is convenient and contrived. Will and Karen and the rest of the cast don't inspire any compassion whatsoever. The recipe for the White Christmas Pie mentioned in the story is included in the book. My impression is that the author thought it would be a cute gimmick, but instead of a rich story with depth, we are left with the sugary fluff.
From other reviews I've seen, most of Brunstetter's books receive better reviews than this one has, so I will not count her out yet. Overall, a sweet story. A light, easy read. Nothing more. | | | | -- Apr 18, 2009 |
What could be more romantic than a yuletide wedding? Will Henderson and Karen Yoder are engaged to be married and planning a December wedding. However, something is standing in the way of their happiness. Call it cold feet or whatever you want. Will has cold feet and is afraid that he will be the same kind of husband and father that his father was. This is not a good thing since Will's father, Frank Henderson left him with an Amish couple to raise. Frank Henderson left his son without saying goodbye.
Karen Yoder is a really sweet Amish lady who will do anything for her man. However, she has gone to a former beau to ask for advice. But Will becomes very envious and suspicious of the other man's intentions. How can Karen prove to Will that he is the only man for her? Frank Henderson is having second thoughts of his own. He decides to right a wrong and seek out his son who he left so many years ago. Just how much will Will's heart take? His estranged father making an appearance in his life right when he is contemplating the biggest decision of his life. Will's 'adoptive' parents, Mark and Regina, try to help him out as much as they can. Will has always been partial to Regina's white Christmas pie. Could it be that the recipe to the beloved pie could answer a lot of unanswered questions?
Wanda Brunstetter has done it again! This is a treat for all readers who enjoy a holiday romance or inspirational story of true love. This is a sure fire book to sweeten your holidays. Its a true delight to read, will fill your heart and doesn't add any calories to your yuletide diet!
