Product Description
This moving allegory of the Christian life is one of the best Christian fantasies to be found anywhere. It is a sequel to the award-winning "The Book of the Dun Cow".

Additional Information
This sequel to the award-winning The Book of the Dun Cow stands on its own as a powerful work of literature. In this absorbing, highly original fantasy, Chauntecleer, Pertelote, and the other familiar characters of the Coop struggle to piece together their shattered lives in the aftermath of the terrible conflict with the dreaded Wyrm. But their respite is short-lived: Into this struggling community, Wyrm again insinuates himself, with dire consequences for all. The reappearance of the dog Mundo Coni unveils a darker mystery yet -- and the threat of a final horror when evil yields up its most devastating secrets.

Told by a master storyteller, The Book of Sorrows is a taught and spellbinding tale that immerses readers in a variety of adventures -- heroic, humorous, and touching -- moving inexorably toward the final confrontation that decides the fate of the characters and their world. No one who reads it will remain unmoved. It explores the value and goodness of existence, the darker side of reality, and qualities of love, kindness, courage, and hope that can transform even "this troublous existence."

Here is fast-paced fantasy filled with richly drawn characters and gripping excitement, set against a colorful, fully realized world, and with depth of meaning that will draw readers back again and again to ponder the images long after the final battle is waged between the forces of life and death.

A myth for spiritual leaders to ponder  Mar 19, 2010
The Book of Sorrows, as I see it, is a message from a pastor to all spiritual leaders about their true role in the community. If you are a pastor who spends more time and energy rebuking sinners, pounding the pulpit, ranting about evil, raging about homosexuals, and warning your parishioners about how Satan is out to destroy them, than actually encouraging them and uniting them in worship and in the Great Work of feeding Jesus' sheep, READ THIS BOOK! It is a wonderful, heart-breaking message and an admonishment to lost souls who are trying to lead others.

A painful, yet hauntingly beautiful, tale  Jun 16, 2009
I've read the prequel - the Book of the Dun Cow - over a dozen times.

I have only been able to read the Book of Sorrows twice in the past 15 years. It is a gut-wrenching tale, all the more so because the author is so eloquent in his prose that I feel I know the various characters personally (that they are animals is irrelevant) and the pain they feel and the sorrows they endure hit me at a deep level.

I'm a guy, and very few things would make me cry (such as the loss of a loved one). This book did.

I'm steeling myself up to read it again this year, and then it will find its way back onto my bookshelf for another 5-10 years before I have the strength to get through it again.

An epic fable you won't put down  May 5, 2008
I came to love Walter Wangerin's writing after carefully reading for 3 consecutive years his Lenten meditations on the 14th and 15th chapters of the Gospel of Mark. I tried The Book of the Dun Cow because it was an award winning book and I like epic fiction. I was not disappointed. For me, the story left me with significant insights and "vocabulary" for understanding mutual strengths and weaknesses in the context of community. Both men and women will find this a worthy adventure.

awesome  Feb 28, 2008
The book of sorrows is an awesome book, very moving. A great sequel to the Book of theDun Cow.

The title is an understatement  Jan 4, 2008
Without a doubt, this is the most heart-wrenching, heartbreaking book I have ever read. The pain and sorrow--beyond sorrow!--related in the tale made me want to grab the author and shake him while screaming "Why why why?" in his face. Yet I read it to the end, and the end was satisfying. However, I don't think I am likely to read it again. I'm too soft-hearted for it! The synopsis on the back of the book (related above as "book description") is, I think, a bit misleading.
